Fabrikat Normal is a geometric typeface which is based on 20th century German engineers’ typefaces. It is optimised for small sizes and long texts, but due to its constructed architecture it also works in headlines or display use. You can combine Fabrikat Normal with the more straight and space saving Fabrikat Kompakt or the reduced to the max Fabrikat Mono.

When we designed the first version of Fabrikat (2016), we created an engineers typeface: Constructed, functional and geometric. Fabrikat was a success and a good choice for designers to create logos, posters and corporate designs. One year later we added Fabrikat Mono to take the approach of simplicity and reduction even further. As more and more people fell in love with the look of Fabrikat, we felt that there is a need for a more “normal” version that can be used as a workhorse for long texts and complex typographic challenges. This new version had to be pushed into a slightly more general typeface, without losing the basic concept. We softened the strong characteristics like the the narrow and vertical architecture of the “original” and added more space to the letterforms – a big step towards legibility in small texts. With the help of Inga Plönnigs we managed to finish this big type project within one year: Hello Fabrikat Normal!
A geometric sans O (e.g. in FF Mark) is usually based on a circle and consists only of curves. The architecture of Fabrikat is different: All round characters like “O” “G” or “C” have a straight vertical part in the middle. The goal was a space-saving, constructed typeface without losing the geometric appearance.
As Fabrikat grew to a super family of 42 fonts in an organic way, we decided to take the chance and rename the fonts appropriately to their character: Fabrikat Kompakt (formerly known as Fabrikat), Fabrikat Mono and Fabrikat Normal were born.
The infamous prototype of a constructed engineers typeface is DIN 1451 which was created by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardisation) in 1931 and established the idea of straight verticals in the round characters. At first glance Fabrikat may feel DIN-ish because of this similar approach, however, closer observation reveals that Fabrikat is more constructed and more straight in many ways.
If you look at the stroke endings of Fabrikat you can see that they are all vertical or horizontal – this gives it a more “organised” feeling. The numerals are more constructed, inspired by early monospaced typewriter faces. The consistent visual language of round shapes (o vs. e) was an important aspect as well as the counter shapes, which are counter symmetrical when appropriate. Apart from the construction of each character it was most important to us to produce a legible typeface with a clean character. Neither playful nor funny, but functional.
Fabrikat Normal not only has an extended character set to support the most common latin based languages, but also includes a rich OpenType feature support. The OpenType features enable excellent typography for the users in all contemporary layout applications.

Apart from the standard character set, some fonts contain several versions of a letter called ‘alternates’. Standard letters can be exchanged by those alternates by selecting them through the Opentype features panel, thus every letter of the particular stylistic set will be swapped. Often times this changes the entire appearance of a typeface.

Whenever fractions are needed OpenType code makes sure that if you type any numbers and add a slash between them, it is replaced by a proper fraction automatically.

In addition to the standard proportional figures, the fonts contain a set of tabular figures. This means that all figures have the same width, which is useful for setting up invoices, tables, schedules, lists, etc.

A subscript is a character that is sits slightly below the baseline. Subscripts are used in formulas, mathematical equations, and specifications of chemical compounds and isotopes, yet they can be used in many other areas as well. These characters are not simply ordinarily reduced in size – to keep them visually consistent with the rest of the font, they are slightly adjusted in an optically reduced size.
Format2
A superscript is a character that is sits slightly above the cap-height. It has the same weight and size of a subscript character. Superscripts are also used in formulas, mathematical equations and text references such as footnotes and can be used in many other areas.
