Fabrikat Kompakt (formally know as Fabrikat) is a type family designed by Christoph Koeberlin with creative input of Hannes von Döhren. The Sans Serif family consists of seven weights plus matching italics. The geometric design is based on German 20th century engineers’ typefaces and has a plain and precise appearance. The shapes are optically corrected, yet retain an uncut charm. They work best in display sizes and headlines. The type family is equipped for complex, professional typography with alternate letters, arrows, fractions and an extended character set to support Central and Eastern European as well as Western European Languages.

Fabrikat Kompakt

Engineering meets Design.

Following several defined principles Fabrikat Kompakt has been constructed on a grid. But a good typeface needs to be optically corrected to feel consistent and to work in texts. So while designing the type family we tried to stay as close as possible to mathematical principles and corrected stems and units just where we felt it is needed. Fabrikat Kompakt’s attitude is seated between design and engineering: Narrow, compact and precise. In addition to the Kompakt family we created Fabrikat Mono to take the approach of simplicity and reduction even further and Fabrikat Normal, a softer version for small sizes.

OpenType Features – or what else you can do with it, besides designing your corporate design.

A font of today’s needs has to include more than just the alphabet and some punctuation. Besides a big number of accented letters, making sure that the typeface has a good language support, a font should include several features for excellent typographic work joining forces with the layout applications of the time and of course the user. Here is a selection of what this font family has to offer under the hood.

Fractions

If fractions are needed anywhere an OpenType code makes sure that if you type any numbers combined with a slash between a fraction will automatically be substituted.

Tabular Figures

Besides the standard lining figures, the fonts also contain a set of tabular figures. This means that all numbers have the same width, which is useful for setting up invoices, tables or every other task where the figures should have a structured appearance among themselves.

Alternates

Beside the standard letters a font sometimes contains several versions of a letter called alternates. You can exchange the alternate with the standard letter by selecting it through the Opentype feature panel and every letter of the stylistic set will be exchanged. Often this results in a totally different optical appearance of the typeface.

Subscript

A subscript is a character that is set slightly below the normal line of type. They are used in formulas, mathematical expressions, and specifications of chemical compounds and isotopes, but can have many other uses as well. These characters are not simply ordinary characters reduced in size – to keep them visually consistent with the rest of the font, they are slightly heavier than a reduced-size character would be

Superscript

A superscript is a character that is set slightly above the line of type. It has the same weight and size like a subscript character. They are also used in formulas, mathematical expressions and text references, but can have many other uses as well.

In addition to Fabrikat Kompakt we created Fabrikat Normal and Fabrikat Mono.

As Fabrikat grew to a super family of 42 fonts in an organic way, we decided to take the chance and rename the fonts appropriately to their character: Fabrikat Kompakt (formerly known as Fabrikat), Fabrikat Mono and Fabrikat Normal were born.
