Gurky Grotesque: A tribute to imperfection.

Gurky Grotesque is a type family consisting of 12 fonts, ranging from ExtraLight to Black. It is reminiscent of old metal type, favoring quirky imperfections over smooth curves. We went on a search for character and unique solutions to bring back the charm of vernacular type and the appeal of imperfection. In contrast to big type systems without irregularities, Gurky Grotesque embraces its inconsistencies and its edginess. It comes with a comprehensive character set, modern OpenType features, and variable fonts.

The 18° italic angle

In addition to the six uppercase weights Gurky Grotesque comes up with six fitting italics. A powerful 18° angle and tweaks like the one-eyed-a, the sloppy-marathon-s or the ultra-dynamic-goggles-g are giving an even more energetic tonality to the type family.

It is important to us to manufacture type that is well equipped with a decent language support with all the features necessary for excellent typographic work. Alternates

Since the earliest days of metal type, there have been variations of the same letter in a font. For the past twenty years you can switch between such alternates by selecting them in the OpenType feature panel. The use of specific alternates may have a significant impact on the overall appearance of a typeface, e.g. changing from a two-storey g to its single-storey version.

When you typeset a slash between figures to separate denominators and numerators, OpenType will automatically create a proper fraction.

Tabular Figures

When figures are typeset in invoices, annual reports or any other table, you may want to use tabular figures. Unlike conventional proportional figures, all tabular figures have the same width, achieving a structured appearance in lists.

Oldstyle Figures

Lining or proportional figures tend to stand out in a long text, similar to the effect that ALL-CAPS typesetting has. It is useful to switch to old-style figures that have smaller shapes with ascenders and descenders (similar to lowercase letters) and therefore fit seamlessly in any text.

Subscript

A subscript is a character that slightly sits below the baseline. They are used in formulas, mathematical expressions as well as in specifications of chemical compounds and isotopes, but may have many other uses as well. These characters are not simply ordinary characters reduced in size: to keep them visually consistent with the rest of the typeface, they are optically heavier than a proportionally scaled character.
