The Goodlife type family is a lovely handlettering collection designed by Hannes von Döhren with techincal support of Christoph Koeberlin. It contains six different hand drawn fonts with loads of features and a set of extras such as catchwords, arrows, ornaments & more. With this set and a little bit of love and care it is possible to create beautiful “handmade” graphics. Equipped with automatically exchanging alternates, ligatures, end forms, swash letters and some other features, Goodlife is optimized to feel not just like a font but like true handletterings.

Font Design vs. True Lettering

A handwriting font always tries to imitate real hand writing or lettering. The problem is, that if you use a font instead of a handwritten piece it is nearly impossible to achieve this organic feel. For example several letters will be doubled and connections between some certain letters have is own rules. The collaboration between Hannes von Döhren as a type designer focusing on the design and Christoph Koeberlin, a type engineer specialized in font technology, gave a lot of new possibilities to the project. Combining these skills they tried to make a hand-made font family which does not have the disadvantages of standard script font family.

We knew that it will never be possible to reach the level of a real hand lettering where an artist invests long time in every single word. But if it comes to big campaigns, a lot of different uses inside a campaign, or even a campaign where more than one agency has to work in several countries, a font family clearly has it advantages. So we gave our best using all technical possibilities to honor the advantages of real hand lettering. Goodlife is full of features, lettersets, special forms and intelligent font technic. Here is an example how Goodlife Brush behaves in a layout applications like indesign. The letters are automatically exchanged to avoid repetition. You can also choose alternates like ligatures manually.

With the whole font set you can achieve a great variety, still coming from one hand.

A font of today’s needs has to include more than just the alphabet and some punctuation. Besides a big number of accented letters, making sure that the typeface has a good language support, a font should include several features for excellent typographic work joining forces with the layout applications of the time and of course the user. Here is a selection of what this font family has to offer under the hood.

In a font every letter should work with every other letter – when it comes to script typefaces there are different rules because the connections between the letters have to be observed. Some letters are ending at the top others at the bottom. To get this fixed and always come up with a fluid solution Goodlife Brush contains a ton of ligatures making sure that every word looks nearly like a hand lettering.

Alternates

Each letter of Goodlife Serif has one or several alternate letters to avoid repitition. A special programmed logarhithm exchanges letters while writing texts to make sure that letters differentiate and the hand written feeling won't get lost.

Goodlife Sans Condensed also has a special stylistic alternates feature. When it is turned on all rounded letters become circles, this results in a nice visual effect.

Ornaments

Additionally to the letters this font family contains a big set of ornaments, borders, catchwords and symbols fitting to the characteristics of the typeface.
