I enjoy drawing beautiful forms and searching for new lettershapes which fit perfectly in the concept – yes, this might be one reason why I am a type designer. Giulia is a non connected hand drawn type face – a kind of hybrid between a rounded sans serif and a script face. Several letter forms like the capital “Q” or the capital “Y” the “e” or the “h” appear unusual to a sans serif coming from the philosophy of a script face. Combining these worlds and create a new world where both approaches work smoothly together was the basic idea and the starting point of Giulia. For a more reduced version with a similar feeling, you can have a look at Giulia Plain.
In addition to the extravagant and curly Giulia we added Giulia Plain, which is equipped with more conventional letterforms, still breathing the air of her bigger sister. You can compare the shapes and you will see that Giulia Plain is orientated towards a more “learned” architecture. This makes it more readable in smaller sizes or longer texts – some users might even prefer the cleaner version for headlines.
A font of today’s needs has to include more than just the alphabet and some punctuation. Besides the standard letters a font sometimes contains several versions of a letter called alternates. You can exchange the alternate with the standard letter by selecting it through the Opentype feature panel and every letter of the stylistic set will be exchanged. Often this results in a totally different optical appearance of the typeface.

When lining figures are used in a reading text they often produce a visual stretch in the text and disturb the grey value. It has the same effect if you use ALL CAPS in a text. One solution could be to make the numbers slightly smaller and give them some more space in-between. The other, more elegant way is to use the old style figures, they have ascenders and descenders like the lower case letters and will fit seamlessly in the text.
